Flocculant

Flocculation is a process where fine particles clump together forming a floc, i.e. an aggregated form of the smaller particles. There is always confusion between flocculation and coagulation, where flocculants are often polymers, coagulant is a salt that breaks down to release a charge. A flocculant helps in clumping the particles together, as well as helping in water treatment.

Flocculants are widely used in many industries for various purposes. Though flocculants are used in separation of solids and liquids, it also assists in improving the water quality be it raw water, potable water and of course waste water. Therefore, WaterEx's Flocculants helps the entire process to function efficiently. Our objective objective has always been to create a formulation which helps organisations to improve water quality within the regulatory requirements along with maintaining cost effectiveness.

A case of salts and metallic hydroxides becomes functional once an anionic flocculant reacts with a positive zeta potential suspension.

In the case of silica or organic substances will become functional in the opposite case, where a cationic flocculant reacts with a negatively charged suspension i.e. having negative zeta potential.

Anionic Polyelectrolyte Powder

WaterEx's Anionic Polyelectrolyte Power is to be used as a flocculant in direct filtration process. This product is a medium anionic charged power that helps in settling of inorganic suspended solids. Thus, if you need effluent treatment for inorganic suspended solids, in any of the below WaterEx's Anionic Polyelectrolyte Power is the solution: Metal processing, coal washing effluent water, textile dye, food, fishery etc.

Application and Dosage

Application and dosage is the process to be careful and vigilant about. WaterEx's Anionic Polyelectrolyte Powder dosage varies from 0.2 to 3.0 pppm. The range is due to the type and level of effluent treatment required. For on optimising performance of the system post application, it is preferable to get a jar test for the system and accordingly dosage must be decided.

Jar Test

Jar test is a simple test. Follow the steps to increase the accuracy by using WaterEx's Anionic Polyelectrolyte Power:

  • ~ Take a sample of the effluent water in a beaker.
  • ~ Add WaterEx's Anionic Polyelectrolyte Powder.
  • ~ Whisk the solution for a minute at around 100-120 rpm.
  • ~ After a minute, slower the process at 60 rpm.

Note: The results especially the system behavior and sedimentation.

Procedure and precautions upon dispersion and dissolving flocculants:

Flocculants usually require nearly an hour for complete dissolution into the effluent water. Ideally, the time required for dissolution depends upon various factors, being the type of flocculant, level of treatment required, temperature and the agitation system (time and speed). If all of the factors are not measured and followed properly, it may lead to lowering of the performance.

Agitation speed:

Ideally the agitation speed must be around 200 to 400 rpm, where the motor is 1-2m3 mixing tank. It is not advisable to have a higher speed for the system reducing the revolutions for the motor, as it may lead to disruption in the process.

Dissolving concentration:

The concentration of flocculants in the system is an essential process. For effective flocculation, dissolve a higher concentration around. 0.1-02% thereon diluting the mixture before it is ready to use.

Handling and Storage

Some safety precautions that must always be followed are:

  • ~ Follow the instructions from the material safety data sheet, as wearing splash goggles, lab coats, gloves, boots and vapour respirator while handling with chemicals or being in a factory premise.
  • ~ If there are splashes on your skin, immediate rinsing is required with water.
  • ~ A splash into the eye, calls for immediate need for medical attention.
  • ~ One must not be injected.

WaterEx's Anionic Polyelectrolyte Powder must be stored in the very same container as provided by the seller.

Keep the containers in covered, closed, cool, dry place, thus away from heat, flame and direct sunlight.

Packing

WaterEx's Anionic Polyelectrolyte Power is available in 25Kg packages.
